Hey there, it’s Ryann, your host from Coffee Talks Therapy Podcast. Today, I want to dive into a topic that many of us can relate to — binge eating on the weekends. I’ve been there, and I know how challenging it can be, especially when you feel in control all week and then everything seems to unravel on Friday. Let’s talk about why this happens and, more importantly, how to stop it.
Do you find yourself disciplined and in control with your food choices throughout the week, only to have it all go out the window come Friday? I’ve been through this personally, and I understand the frustration of starting a new diet every Monday, only to repeat the cycle.
One major mistake many of us make is planning a new diet for Monday. When we set this expectation, our brain goes into survival mode, anticipating deprivation. The result? Friday becomes a free-for-all, with our bodies urging us to consume everything we won’t have on the upcoming diet. It’s a biological response to the fear of restriction.
To stop binge eating on the weekends, the first step is breaking free from the Monday diet cycle. No more planning restrictive diets that trigger overeating on Fridays. It’s about shifting from a mindset of scarcity to one of balance and sustainability.
Another common pitfall is saving calories throughout the week to indulge on the weekend. This sets you up for failure. When you enter a meal starving, your brain prioritizes quick satisfaction over mindful eating. Instead, eat normally throughout the day, regardless of your evening plans. This prevents overeating and potential binging.
Weekends often mean less structure and more downtime, which can lead to mindless eating. Combat this by incorporating mindfulness into your weekend eating habits. Sit down at a table, savor your food, and enjoy the experience. Avoid mindless munching in front of the TV, as it can contribute to overeating.
