I’m a recovered binge eater who changed the story from something that happened to me to something that happened for me. Now, I’m a licensed therapist teaching you to do the same.
My mission? To help you ditch food stress and live your life with mental peace and freedom every single day!
Welcome to The Perspective Shift! A weekly newsletter by Ryann Nicole designed to help you see food, your body, and healthy living in a whole new light.
The other day, after leaving my workout class, I noticed a giant tree had fallen right by my car. I’m not kidding, look at this photo!!
There was a storm the night before, but I definitely wasn’t expecting to see a fallen tree!
And what’s wild is that this was just one tree in a row of five—same size, same spot, same everything. But only this one fell over. Poor tree!! But why?! Why this one while the others were totally fine?
It’s a great example (this is why I took a photo ha!) of how we can’t always see what’s beneath the surface, but the roots are what truly control our strength and what we can withstand.
The thing that was probably different about this tree is that its roots weren’t as strong as the others. Meaning it doesn’t matter if it looked the same on the outside—internally, it was different.
And that got me thinking…
It’s easy to get caught up in quick fixes, but real, lasting change happens when you get to the roots of the issue. If you’re constantly thinking about food, it’s not because you lack willpower—it’s because food is filling some deeper need or void in your life. Until you dig into why you’re turning to food, the cycle will keep repeating.
Where in your life are you trying to change with surface-level fixes rather than addressing the root cause? What would it look like to dig deeper?
Grab a journal and start reflecting on what the roots are for you. What deeper emotions, needs, or situations might be driving your relationship with food? Write down whatever comes up, no matter how small or big it feels.
Trying to resist the urge to binge by going for a walk.
Going for a walk when you feel the urge to binge will not stop you from bingeing. I will tell you why!
My response to: “My therapist told me to eat baby carrots to stop binge eating. ”
Not all therapists are trained in binge eating. Just like not all doctors are trained to do heart surgery. 🚨
